Yes, there is a slight adjustment period at first, but once you begin to see the results, it gets much easier.   Speaking of results, common sense will tell you that they will vary (most literature indicates up to 2-5 pounds per week for the first couple of weeks and then tapering down after that,) but I do truly believe (and clinical trials show) that if you stick with this and follow along, you should make some decent progress. The Medifast Programis a very easy to follow diet program which encompasses small “Medifast Meals” (meal replacement products that are prepackaged for convenience) and one substantial healthful meal (called “lean and green”) that you prepare yourself. There is a HUGE selection of medifast meals that go beyond the bars and shakes. (Although the bars and shakes are really good). They offer puddings, crackers, lattes, cappuccinos, oatmeals, eggs, soup, chili, stew, etc. The typical weight loss rate is 2 – 5 pounds per week for the first few weeks and 1 -2 pounds per week after that. The typical cost is about $8-$10 per day, and this is usually brought down with coupons. (Available at the end of book). From my interviews with diets and my own experience, I’ve found that when you factor in how much you may be spending on eating out and on treats like lattes, most people will realize that they spend more than this on foods that are probably not conducive to weight loss in good health. Often in terms of both actual costs and health care savings, Medifast is actually saving you money. (affiliate disclosure)

How Does Medifast Work? You select a plan (women, men, diabetics) and typically you will chose a two to four week package. You can also add on any extras you think you’ll need. (Look at the Medifast blender if you don’t already have a high quality, heavy duty blender. As Medifast’s blender REALLY makes many of the items taste like thick, rich treats).  The package is usually shipped out quickly and from that package you built your meals.

Why Medifast Works Well: From all of the research that I have done, Medifast is so successful for a few reasons. First, the program is very easy to follow. You are given a large variety of “safe” choices, but there is no shopping, counting calories, adding points, tallying calories versus exercise, etc. You are also allowed to have a good bit of carbs and snacks and foods that make you feel like you are cheating when in fact, you’re quite safe. You are also given a lot of leeway on your lean and green meals, offering you further variety. Plus, the plan is ultra convenient. You can easily take the meals with you. And, it’s a great plan for busy people who don’t want to have to prepare or think about what they should eat. Because it’s so easy to follow, people stay on it and therefore get results. There is a John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health study which shows that participants on medifast lost twice as much weight and complied with the plan twice as long than those who were not on medifast. Cons
If you are easily bored, you’ll have to do a little work to add variety to your lean and green meals and shift your “medifast meals” choices around to ensure you’re getting the variety you need. There are 70 choices available and there are also recipes to even get more out these choices so experiment so that you aren’t bored or get into a rut.

Further Thoughts: Medifast is extremely popular right now. With both Kristi Swanson and Genie Francis losing over 35 pounds each (and Kristi Swanson hitting a size 4 post baby) Medifast is a well known, brand that is known for being relatively easy, convenient, and effective. II. How To Get The Most Out Of Medifast: Five Tips To Ensure Success

1. Make sure your attitude is in the right place before you start. Your attitude toward your weight loss will play a significant role in your success with medifast. There are countless medical and psychological studies that prove your attitude dramatically effects your results. Go into any weight loss program feeling good that you are making a powerful, positive decision that will lasting effects on the outcome of your life. Don’t go in looking for a quick fix but a lifestyle improvement. medifast is not all about numbers on a scale. It’s about feeling better, making positive changes and gaining more energy. It’s about making your own happiness, health, self care and well being as high a priority as pleasing others. Make you’re your attitude is heading in this direction before you start.

2. Plan well in advance. Medifast makes this diet really easy and convenient by providing most of your meals. However, Medifast unfortunately can’t make every decision. Think about what you’d like to eat the day before and at least portion it out and gather all of the ingredients you’ll need for your lean and green meal beforehand. (Bagged salads, prepacked stir fry veggies and the George Foreman grill can be a God send here). The reason for this is if you’re hurried, traveling, etc. you’ll be more apt to eat out or make poor choices if you haven’t already portioned out your meals and packed or prepared them. Don’t allow yourself to get in a situation where you’ll have to make an unfortunate decision and then feel regret or guilt later. The easiest way to avoid this is to make these decisions when you’re calm and in a good place. Each good day feeds on itself and is followed by more good days.

3. Feel free to personalize to enhance your experience. If you spend time in medifast chat rooms, you’ll get WONDERFUL ideas about how you can personalize this plan. Here are just a few of the ideas I’ve picked up there: If you love Starbucks as many people do, put your Medifast latte or cappuccino into your old Starbucks cup or to go cup. Suddenly, you won’t feel as though you’re making a sacrifice. There are also countless recipes in the chat rooms and in the Medifast Recipe books that tell you how to take foods from the monthly packages and make them into something else. (Free Recipies at the end of this ebook). For example, the oatmeal can be used to make muffins or cookies. You can add sugar free flavorings to the shakes and fruit drinks to have a huge amount of variety. (Think chocolate, putter pecan, banana strawberry, etc.) You can add ice and flavorings to the fruit drink to make smoothies and thick shakes. You can add a variety of veggies to the scrambled eggs to make an omelet or quiche. Shaved ice with the sugar free syrup makes a darn good snow cone! The possibilities are endless. Feel free to play around with what you’re given so that you love your personal experience.

4. Incorporate fun physical activity: The average 2 pound weight loss, I’ve found in my research, does not typically incorporate an exercise program. Adding even a small amount of exercise can really kick up and speed up your weight loss, at least in my own experience. You don’t have to become a gym rat or a muscle head. Just think about what you activity you like doing and do it with more intensity and for longer. Gardening, walking, running around with your kids or loved ones, dancing, fixing or washing your car, etc are all forms of exercise if you put a little muscle and time behind them. You aren’t required to do exercises you don’t like. If you move more than you have been, I believe that you will more weight. You’ll be taking in less calories on medifast and if you add burning more calories to the mix, in whatever way you wish, you are, in my view more likely to lose weight.  Keep in mind that I’m not an expert.  (Terms of service and affiliate disclosures)

5. Have fun with and on this plan: Simply put, no one is going to stay long term on any weight loss plan if they are having a miserable experience. Medifast offers a lively, supportive chat room on their website and lots of informative articles. If you need support, it is there for the taking. Don’t allow the quest for losing weight to rule your every thought. Knowing that you are making positive changes and following the plan is absolutely enough. Allow that to give you piece of mind. The way it is supposed to work is that by following the plan, you will see results, feed off of those results and the process will continue. But, it IS a process and it’s important that you enjoy the process and not become obsessed with the end result. The end result will come if you keep making the choices and actions to get there. It’s really that simple and there’s no need to over think it. The plan is designed to be easy, convenient and not to require a lot of hard work. So, follow the plan, get in more physical activity and enjoy your life. That’s the best advice I can give.

III. A Few Medifast Recipes

The recipes in this guide were developed using 55, 70 & Plus Supplement Shakes.

When preparing the Medifast Products, the following suggestions might be helpful to you:
1. Medifast tastes best when it is consumed immediately after preparation. Medifast may be consumed up to 24 hours after preparation if kept refrigerated.
2. Add water to blender (the Medifast HealthMate Blender works great) first then add Medifast Supplement
3. If you prefer to use a Fast-Shake Jar rather than a blender, increase the amount of water to 8ox and remove the ice cubes.
4. If you prefer using Medifast Original Supplements, you can still use these recipes. You may want to add a non-nutritive sweetener to taste.
5. If you prefer a slushy consistency, freeze the shake for 1 ½ to 2 hours and blend or stir.

French Vanilla Supplement Shakes
Lemon Meringue Cooler
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
6-8oz of cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/8 – 14 tsp Lemonade Crystal Light (dry mix)
Place ice cubes and water in a blender. Add the Crystal Light, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Key Lime Cooler
1- Packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
6-8 oz of cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/8-1/4 tsp Lemon Lime Crystal Light (dry mix)
Place ice cubes and water in a blender. Add the Crystal Light, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Raspberry Cream
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
6-8oz of cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/8 – 1/4 tsp Raspberry Crystal Light (dry mix)
Place ice cubes and water in a blender. Add the Crystal Light, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Black Cherry Chiller
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
6-8oz of cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/8 – 1/4 tsp Black Cherry Unsweetened Kool-Aid (dry mix)
Place ice cubes and water in a blender. Add the Crystal Light, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Strawberry Shortcake
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
6-8oz of cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/8 – 1/4 tsp Strawberry Extract
Place ice cubes and water in a blender. Add Extract, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Root Beer Float
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
6-8oz of cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/8 – 1/4 tsp Root Beer Extract
Place ice cubes and water in a blender. Add the diet soda , Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Toasted Almond Delight
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
6-8oz of cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/8 – 1/4 tsp Almond Extract
Place ice cubes and water in a blender. Add Extract, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Strawberry Daiquiri
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
6-8oz of cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/8 – 1/4 tsp Strawberry Extract 1/8 Rum Extract
Place ice cubes and water in a blender. Add Extract, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Pina Colada
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
3 oz of cold water
3-4 ice cubes
4 oz Diet Ginger Ale
1/4 tsp Pineapple Extract
1/8 tsp Coconut Extract
1/8 tsp Rum Extract
Place ice cubes and water and diet soda in a blender. Add Extract, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Creamsicle
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
6-8oz of cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/8 tsp Orange Unsweetened Kool Aid (dry mix)
2 drops Red Food Coloring
2 drops Yellow Food Coloring
Dash of Non-nutrivit, artificial sweetener to taste, if desired.
Place ice cubes and water in a blender. Add Kool Aid and food coloring, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed

Vanilla Almond Coffee Cooler
1 packet MedifastVanilla Supplement
6-8oz cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1 tsp Instant Coffee
1/4 Almond Extract
Place ice cubes and water in blender. Add the coffee, extract, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Mocha Delight
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
6-8 oz cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1 tsp Instant Coffee
1/4 Chocolate Extract
Place ice cubes and water in blender. Add the coffee, extract, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Peppermint Patty
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
6-8 oz cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/8-1/4tsp Peppermint Extract
Place ice cubes and water in blender. Add the coffee, extract, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Banana Dream
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
6-8oz cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/8-1/4tsp Banana Extract
Place ice cubes and water in blender. Add the coffee, extract, Medifast Supplement, and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Vanilla Lemon Pudding
1 packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
1 ½ Tbsp Jello Sugar Free Vanilla Instant Pudding (dry mix)
½ packet (1full tsp) Knox Unflavored Gelatin
3 oz hot water 3 oz cold water
1/4tsp Lemon Extract
2 Ice cubes
Combine Medifast Supplement and pudding in a small container. Set aside. Stir gelatin in hot water. Let soften 3-4 minutes, then stir until clear. Add clear water and stir again. Process gelatin mixture, dry ingredients, and extract in blender until thoroughly combined. Add ice cubes one at a time until mixture begins to thicken. Pour into serving bowl. Refrigerate until set, about 15-20 minutes. Stir and Enjoy.

Creamy Chocolate Pudding
1 Packet Medifast Vanilla Supplement
1 ½ Tbsp Jello Sugar Free Vanilla Instant Pudding (dry mix)
½ packet (1 full tsp) Knox Unflavored Gelatin
3 oz hot water
3 oz cold water
2 ice cubes
Combine Medifast Supplement and pudding in a small container. Set aside. Stir gelatin in hot water. Let soften 3-4 minutes, then stir until clear. Add clear water and stir again. Process gelatin mixture, dry ingredients, and extract in blender until thoroughly combined. Add ice cubes one at a time until mixture begins to thicken. Pour into serving bowl. Refrigerate until set, about 15-20 minutes. Stir and Enjoy.

Dutch Chocolate Supplement Shakes
Chocolate Covered Cherry Chiller
1 packet Medifast Chocolate Supplement
6-8oz cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/8 tsp Black Cherry Unsweetened Kool-Aid (dry mix)
Place ice cubes and water in blender. Add the Kool Aid, Medifast Supplement and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Black Forest Freeze
1 packet Medifast Chocolate Supplement
6-8oz cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/2tsp Cherry Extract
Place ice cubes and water in blender. Add extract, Medifast Supplement and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Mocha Delight
1 packet Medifast Chocolate Supplement
6-8oz cold water
3-4 ice cubes
1/2 tsp instant coffee
Place ice cubes and water in blender. Add the coffee, Medifast Supplement and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Chocolate Mint
1 packet Medifast Chocolate Supplement
6-8oz cold water
3-4 ice cubes
4 drops Peppermint Extract
Place ice cubes and water in blender. Add the extract, Medifast Supplement and mix for 10-15 seconds or until most of the ice cubes are crushed.

Chocolate Fudgesicle
1 packet Medifast Chocolate Supplement
8oz cold water
1/8 tsp Chocolate Extract
Place water in blender or shaker jar Add the extract, Medifast Supplement and mix for 10-15 seconds, place in Freezer for 1-2 hours. Stir and Enjoy

Chocolate Banana

Cherry Jubliee
1 packet Medifast Hot Cocoa Supplement
6 oz hot water
1/4tsp Cherry Extract
1/4tsp Almond Extract
Empty Medifast Supplement into mug or cup. Add hot water and extracts. Stir until dissolved. Allow drink to cool for a few minutes to blend flavors. Stir again and enjoy.

1 packet Medifast Hot Cocoa Supplement
6 oz hot water
1/4tsp Orange Extract
1/4tsp Almond Extract

Peppermint Patty
1 packet Medifast Hot Cocoa Supplement
6 oz hot water
1/8 -1/4tsp Peppermint Extract
Empty Medifast Supplement into mug or cup. Add hot water and extracts. Stir until dissolved. Allow drink to cool for a few minutes to blend flavors. Stir again and enjoy.

M-7 Drink/Gazpacho

1 Packet Medifast Tomato Fast Soup
8 oz hot water
Dash of pepper
Mix Medifast Fast Soup and hot water in a cup and add pepper. Chill in refrigerator 1-3 hours. Stir and enjoy

Spicy Chicken Oriental

1 packet Medifast Delicate Chicken Fast Soup
6 oz very hot (not boiling) water
1/8 tsp Mrs. Dash Extra Spicy salt free seasoning blend
1 tsp low sodium soy sauce
Empty Medifast Fast Soup into a large mug or cup. Blend spices into dry mix. Add hot water, stirring constantly until thoroughly blended. Add soy sauce, stir and enjoy.

Medifast Muffins

5 packets of Medifast Maple And Brown Sugar Oatmeal 1 packet of Medifast Chocolate Pudding 3 packets of Splenda Or Stevia2 teaspoons of baking powder1/4 teaspoon of baking soda1/2 teaspoon of white vinegar1/4 cup of Sugar Free Chocolate Syrup
1-1/4 cup of cold water, added slowly

Combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly. Add water slowly to ensure that the batter is not too runny. The batter should be moist but not runny or too dry. Drop by tablespoon into 12 regular sized muffin cups..

Bake at 325 degrees for 35 minutes. Inserted toothpick should come out clean. Remove immediately from pan. Keep refrigerated.

Momentum By medifast is a metabolism booster which contains 100 mg of Caffeine and 90 mg of EGCG.

The combination of Caffeine and EGCG found in three (3) Momentum products has been clinically shown to have the maximum effect on inducing thermogenesis which is basically “turning up the heat” on weight loss.

If you’re on the five plus one plan, you can consume any combination of a total of three momentum products daily.

Five Minutes With … Genie Francis (Soap Opera Digest)

Soap Opera Digest: Congrats on the Medifast gig.

Genie Francis: Thank you. It’s fun. I’ve never been a spokesperson. This is the first time I’ve ever done it. It’s terrific because I’m able to have a job [running her store, The Cherished Home] and have a good Hollywood-type of job, but live in Maine. Obviously, dieting is hard and having the strength to carry on is tough, but now it’s part of my job. It’s a win-win. It’s good for my health and it’s good for my career.

Digest: You’ve spoken publically about your own struggles with weight. Francis: The hard part about the soap opera business is that they really don’t want me to age beyond 18. They think that’s the lightning in the bottle and I’m 45 now. Other parts of the industry allow people to age.

Digest: How did the Medifast opportunity come about?

Francis: They contacted my agent and my agent contacted me. That’s really it. I guess they felt that I would be a good one for their demographic because most of their people are people in their mid-40s, after babies, women right where I am, where their kids are just a little bit older and they can put their attention back on themselves. I fit that demographic.

Digest: Tell us about the food.

Francis: The oatmeal is very good. The shake, put it in the blender with some ice. That’s really good. When you have it with ice, it has more of a creamy texture and it’s a whole lot more filling. The chocolate drink that looks like a chocolate milk box, I keep that in my car and in my purse for an emergency if I’ve run out of product and I need something quick. The scrambled eggs are surprisingly tasty. You make it with a fork in a bowl and really whip it and then cook it in a pan with Pam spray. It’s surprisingly like a real egg. And you have to really keep up with your water. I would expect that the first week you’re going to feel a little oogy and a little cranky, but I haven’t found a diet yet where the first week isn’t a little uncomfortable. That’s just part of changing one’s habits, changing what you’re putting into the body. That’s going to be there no matter what. But when you get through the adjustment period, the most important thing is do what they request and eat every two hours. If I’m awake at 7 a.m., at 7:15 it’s usually the shake, by 9:15 I usually have my bar and then by 9:30 I’m on the treadmill. I need those carbs to do my workout. I like that there’s not a lot of the footwork and preparation. The only thing you have to have on hand is your lean and green meal. You need your salad. You need vegetables to cook, which I mostly rely on broccoli. Spinach is good because I need potassium. You need a salad dressing that is 6 grams of carbohydrates or less. It’s not a huge amount of shopping or weighing or any of that. The rest of it is in boxes and you pull it together. The good part is it’s very portable. You can take it where you’re going. You can go on vacation with it. In terms of being easy for a busy person, I’d say Medifast is at the top of the list.

Digest: Exercise is also a part of the plan, correct?

Francis: Yes, I have a terrific trainer. Amy has actually gotten me to do stuff that I’ve never been able to do before. Just yesterday I reached my goal of a 12-minute mile. That was a good feeling. Her goal for me, and I’m starting to get there with her, is that we can run a little 5K together so that I can actually start to race. I like the exercise part because it does a lot more than just burn calories. It straightens out my head. I think for me that’s a very important part of the puzzle. I’m not going wacky. I’m doing moderate exercise right now to complement the Medifast program.

Digest: How are you making out on the plan?

Francis: I lost 4 pounds in the first two weeks. For me, at 45 years of age, to lose 2 pounds or even 2.5 pounds a week is pretty amazing. It’s very, very good. It’s not like that first week of a diet where sometimes you drop 5 or 6 pounds. I didn’t start there. I was in the midst of doing my own workout and diet program and changed to Medifast and Medifast has increased my loss for me. I can lose a pound a week, maybe a pound and a half, and that’s with exercise. But with Medifast, it seems to be going at the rate of 2-2.5, so it is more rapid.

Digest: Are you allowed to cheat?

Francis: Are you allowed [laughs]?!? If you cheat, you’re going to pay for it. It’s better if you can put your nose to the grindstone for at least 6 weeks because chances are in 6 weeks, you’ll be done with the weight-loss program and then you’ll go into maintenance and refeeding where you’re going to do a lot of study about proper eating and eating habits. What they’re doing with the low carbohydrate thing is they’re putting you into a metabolic state in which you burn fat. If you throw in carbohydrates, you throw yourself out of that state. So, even just a bag of chips is going to mess with you.

One of the pages that I used to visit a lot from the medifast website was genie’s blog.  She used to list sample menus and it really helped me a lot.   (Note: this was before they had the pancakes, brownies, and ice cream.) You check out the Medifast Official Site for specifics, but below, I’ll summarize five days of her meals.  Notice that she switches out the time of her lean and green meals a lot.  (She doesn’t have it for dinner every day.) I also like how she mixes the shakes with coffee and the fruit drinks with tea.

Sample Day 1: medifast shake mixed with coffee; medifast apple cinnamon oatmeal;  medifast chicken and rice soup;  medifast caramel bar;  lean and green meal of steamed lobster with zucchini and mixed salad; and medifast banana pudding.

Sample Day 2: medifast scrambled eggs; medifast chai latte;  medifast beef veggie soup;  medifast dutch chocolate shake;  a lean and green salmon stir fry; and medifast raspberry iced tea.

Sample Day 3: medifast hot cocoa; lean and green meal at breakfast this time (omelet of eggs, bell pepper, spinach and green olives);  medifast strawberry crème shake; medifast oatmeal raisin bar; medifast crab soup for dinner (instead of a lean and green;)  medifast orange crème shake which has been frozen to take on the consistency of sherbert.

Sample Day 4: medifast blueberry oatmeal; medifast banana crème shake; a lean and green lunch of grilled chicken, spinach and bell peppers and salad; medifast cranberry mango drink (mixed with tea,)  medifast ready-to-drink shake, and medifast caramel nut bar.

Sample Day 5: medifast cappuccino; medifast fruit & nut granola bar; medifast homestyle chili; medifast peach iced tea;  a lean & green meal of a turkey burger with lettuce for a bun with tomato and green beans.
